What Makes Greg Schumsky Films “Different”…

I’ve been in the video and film business for a very long time. Three decades or so, professionally, but more like five overall. From being a production assistant, to cameraman, or grip, or whatever was needed, when working for someone else, or at times on my own, many years before now, starting up my little independent company, Greg Schumsky Films.

I’ve had a love for video and film for a long time. Film, since I was about 5 years old, when I learned how to use my parents Keystone 8mm movie camera. And then video, when I was introduced to a reel-to-reel Sony, black and white video camera and recorder around 1974-75. I was mesmerized. I wanted to figure out not only how to use it, but do fun stuff with it.

Many years have passed since then and I’ve learned a lot, and know what I love to create. My first love as I mentioned was film. Not so much movies (those I have always enjoyed), but film was where it was at. There is a big difference between a film and a movie. Really. “The Black Stallion” is a film. Watch it and you’ll see what I mean. "Back to the Future” is a movie. One is art and meant to entertain to some degree. The other is entertainment and nothing more.

So, when it comes to video production, I decided if I’m going to get back into business as it were, I wanted to give my clients the chance to have a film made for them, versus just another corporate or pro-video. And those “films” are all about storytelling - from the camera angles, to the lighting, the color, the feel.. whether it’s a sizzle reel for a show, or promotional piece, or anything really, why not take the time to go the extra mile and make it truly cinematic?

I shoot strictly with actual cinema cameras, and use 99% of the time anamorphic (CinemaScope) wide screen lenses. And it turns out, clients actually appreciate that, because the “digital” that’s typical of most video, is gone. The image looks like it was shot on film. And I shoot with intention, whether it’s on a tripod, or handheld, or an actual Steadicam rig, from the eye of a storyteller.

And I think, to be fair, that’s what makes Greg Schumsky Films different,

And I hope you see that as well.
